Basic Packet Radio Certification


To obtain BASIC PACKET RADIO CERTIFICATION the ARES member must possess the following equipment and complete the following training in addition to the equipment and training required for LEVEL ONE and LEVEL TWO VHF CERTIFICATION.


Training Requirements

  • Operate a Utah County standard packet station during an ARES sponsored event such as a Sheriff’s office callout, an ARES simulated emergency exercise, ARES packet training exercise, or at a liaison EOC.
  • Complete the following requirements (without prompting or other help from any other person):
    • Demonstrate the ability to setup a Utah County standard packet station, in 30 minutes or less.
    • Connect to another packet station and “Link Test” using Direct, Digipeated, and Node connect modes.
    • Send using ARESPACK, two or more messages.
    • Receive and print using ARESPACK, two or more messages.
    • Be able to type 20 words per minute.
